in Hawaii
~ Frequently Asked Questions ~
1) Where is the class located?
The class is located at a private retreat center on the big island of Hawaii. The center asked that we give the name and location once you have registered. It is a small retreat center with a temple that will serve as our classroom and healing space.
This center is on a big bit of land overlooking the ocean. The land also has awesome waterfalls we can visit and connect with. There are also lots of wonderful places near by to visit. We will take a couple of field trips to take in local energies and places.
2)What is the closest airport?
Hilo, HI (ITO)
3) What about transportation once I arrive in Hawaii?
The car rental facility is in the airport just a short walk from the terminal. Often several members of a group share a car - contact me if you're interested in connecting to share a car with others. Center staff can provide transportation for $60 roundtrip on a limited basis. I will send you details on how to contact center staff when you register.
4) What sort of food will we have?
Meals will be provided throughout your stay with a bag lunch available Wednesday if you request it. We will hire a local chef to cook for us. Food will be primarily fresh with a focus on vegetables and fruits. We’ll sort out details and dietary needs closer to the time of our retreat.
5)What do I need to bring to class?
- Casual clothes, the Big Island is rustic and casual.
- Flash light
- Light raincoat with hood or umbrella
- Protection from sun: hat, sunglasses, lotions
- Warm wrap for early morning practices in Temple (If we have a yoga teacher or meditation leader amongst us who wishes to share in this way)
- Layered clothing with something warm for evening and early morning. Polar fleece is perfect. Nights are in the 60's.
- Shoes that cover toes for volcano hikes. Sturdy hiking boots, sneakers, sandals with covered toes for the retreat center.
- Flip Flops to wear between rooms so feet will be clean when entering indoor spaces barefoot. At the center, they do not wear shoes indoors, you may want socks if your feet get cold on tile.
- Insect repellent
- The center has things for the beach like blankets, towels, coolers, and some snorkeling masks and fins (you will need to drive or find a ride to the beach).
- A notepad and Pen
If you have these or feel called - please bring them - they are optional:
- Seven to twelve stones you would like to use for healing and meditation (stones that could fit in the palm of your hand and be held easily
- A cloth to wrap the stones in
- Any other sacred items that you feel called to bring
-A rattle (I will have some for sale)
-A pendulum
- One to three small gifts in exchange for the rites*
*Traditionally small gifts are given in exchange for the rites. This is to come into Ayni or right relations with the giver.
Please leave at home:
Hair dryers, curling irons, electric razors...The center generates their own electricity & avoids high usage items.
4) Do I need to arrive a few days early to sort out jet lag before class begins?
Saturday night, the 5th, we will have dinner together, do a round of introductions and share a fire ceremony. Most flights will get to Hilo in time to arrive at the center and be part of those opening events. We are planning to begin our workshop in earnest at 10:00 Sunday morning so you will have time to get some extra sleep or walk the land to help your body adjust.
5) Will our schedule be full from dawn to dusk or is there time for me to explore, process and integrate on my own?
The first night, Saturday the 5th we will have dinner, welcome and a fire. Beyond that, we will meet in the morning, afternoon and evening on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. We will have decent breaks for lunch and dinner, and begin and end at reasonable times. The final day of class will be Saturday the 12th. We will finish by noon so that people can be on their way. Part of the purpose of this class is to help you recharge and renew. This will involve time to journal, meditate, connect with nature, walk the land or do exercise of your choosing. Wednesday is a day off from class so you can explore the gorgeous island. When you register, you’ll get the exact location of the center so can begin planing an excursion then!
7) What are some options for the full day off?
At the center, you will fall asleep to the sound of waterfalls and wake up to stunning sunrises. Hawaiian legend teaches an angel protects each water fall. There are FIVE waterfalls on the property - one that is 420 feet tall. You may want to spend the day at the center enjoying places yet unknown.
Beyond that, you can plan a trip to:
Swim with dolphins
Explore the volcanoes
Meditate in lava tubes
Snorkel in pristine waters
Gaze at ancient sea turtles
Sit in ancient ruins
Sunbath on the beach
Jump off cliffs at South Point
Hike to waterfalls and hidden lakes
Wonder through a petrified forest
Soak in Healing waters
Star gaze on top of Mana Kea
